Angle grinder safety: the rules every workshop should follow
An angle grinder is one of the most useful tools in a workshop and one of the most dangerous if it is misused. These rules prevent most accidents.
Before you start
- Check that the disc is rated for at least the grinder’s maximum speed (rpm)
- Inspect the disc — never use one that is cracked, chipped or damaged
- Fit the guard and the side handle, and make sure the disc is tightened correctly
- Secure the work in a vice or clamp; never hold small pieces by hand
Protect yourself
- Wear a face shield or safety glasses, gloves and hearing protection
- Wear close-fitting clothing and keep hair and sleeves away from the disc
- Keep sparks away from anything flammable, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby
While you work
- Use two hands and stand to one side of the disc, not in line with it, in case it kicks back
- Let the grinder reach full speed before touching the work, and do not force it
- Use cutting discs only for cutting and grinding discs only for grinding
When you finish
- Switch off and wait for the disc to stop completely before putting the tool down
- Unplug the grinder — or remove the battery — before changing a disc
