What a home toolbox really needs: the tools to start with
You do not need a hundred tools to look after a home. A small set of good ones handles most repairs, and you can add to it as jobs come up.
The starter set
- Claw hammer
- Screwdrivers — flat and Phillips, in a few sizes
- Adjustable spanner and a combination spanner set
- Pliers — combination and long-nose
- Measuring tape and a spirit level
- Hacksaw and a utility knife
- Allen (hex) keys
- A voltage-tester screwdriver for basic electrical checks
- Torch, work gloves and safety glasses
Add a drill
A cordless drill/driver is the single most useful power tool for a home. Pair it with a set of drill bits for wood, metal and masonry, and a set of screwdriver bits.
Where to spend more
Spend more on the tools you will use often and that must not slip or break: spanners, pliers and screwdrivers. Forged steel and a comfortable grip last for years and are safer to use.
Sets or single tools?
Sets are cheaper per tool and keep everything together, which is ideal when you are starting out. Buy single tools later to fill gaps or to upgrade the ones you use most.
Keep them in good order
Store tools in a dry box, wipe them after use, and put them back in the same place so you can find them in the dark when a pipe leaks.
